Dare to Climb Higher

When was the last time you found yourself doing something you didn't think you could do? What motivated you to push yourself? What threatened to hold you back?

This past summer my brother and sister-in-law welcomed baby #4 to the family, making this nephew #4 for me. In an attempt to win some cool aunt points, 3 of my nephews and I decided we needed to get out of he house and play for a bit.

At 7, 5, and 2 years old my nephews ventured from bouldering (done twice) to sport climbing, letting me strap them in a harness and coax them higher and higher up the wall for the first time ever. I was so proud of my 3 littleies for being brave and doing something they didn't think they could do.

I could not help but think as I belayed my little people how God sees His children. Scared to climb higher, I kept telling them to stretch a little more to reach the red rock, blue rock, or green rock. "I've got you! You're safe! You're so close! Keep going! If you slip or fall I will catch you. You're doing so good! You can do it! I know you can do it! There you go! Nice job! Get your feet up! Stand up! That's it! You're doing it! You're doing great!"

We can climb higher than we ever imagine we can when we trust our equipment, our belayer, and our ability to stretch ourselves and reach out; even if it means we might slip or fall a little in the process, we aren't going to plummet to our doom. Hang tight, look up, and move on when you're ready. Myriads of things are in place to protect and help us. There is a good reason God says to "become as a little child." My nephews taught me that day about leading by example, being brave, trusting someone outside myself, and the satisfaction of doing difficult things. Seriously so proud of my little people, and grateful for the gentle reminder about the nature of God.
